If you're currently in high school or you've graduated high school and have not attended college, you're on the right page. These are the requirements and processes for you to apply to UMKC.

1. Read the UMKC freshman admission requirements.

Students interested in applying to UMKC have several options: 

  • Automatic admission
  • Test-optional admission
  • Competitive admission

Regardless of the process under which you may be admitted, you should complete the high school 17 core requirements, submit high school transcripts, and, if necessary, submit an ACT or SAT score. More information about each admission option is below.

The following courses represent the 17 core requirements:

  • 4 units of English
  • 4 units of Mathematics (Algebra I or higher)
  • 3 units of Science
  • 3 units of Social Studies
  • 2 units of a single Foreign Language
  • 1 unit of Fine Arts

The following chart outlines the minimum requirements for automatic admission within those academic units who allow automatic admission.  Applicants who self-report completion of the 17 core requirements, and who self-report a GPA and test score within the parameters outlined below, may be offered automatic admission. Students admitted under automatic admission must submit official, final high school transcripts before matriculating to UMKC.

Students interested in the following programs should look at the information under competitive admission: Architecture, Urban Planning, and Design; Conservatory, School of Dentistry; School of Medicine; School of Nursing; School of Pharmacy; and School of Law.

UMKC reserves the right to rescind an offer of admission if any misrepresentations on the application or in the supporting documentation are found.

Under the UMKC test-optional admission process, applicants with a 2.75 or University of Missouri System (UM) core GPA may be admitted to UMKC without submitting an ACT or SAT score. Depending on UM core GPA and completion of the required high school core curriculum (outlined above), students may be fully admitted to UMKC or conditionally admitted.

Students interested in the following academic programs are not eligible to be considered under the test-optional process and must submit an ACT or SAT score:

The following types of students must also submit an ACT or SAT score:

  • Students interested in automatic scholarships
  • Students who are homeschooled
  • Student-athletes

 

Students who apply test optional but do not meet certain core curriculum requirements may be admitted to UMKC conditionally, pending completion of an academic support program. These free support programs are designed to help the student transition successfully to UMKC.

  • Peer Academic Leadership (PAL) Program connects incoming students with a dedicated Peer Academic Leader as they begin their studies at UMKC. We strive to empower each student to achieve personal, academic and financial success by connecting students to resources and partners in their educational journey.
  • Summer Bridge Scholars Program is an academically rigorous, eight-week summer experience to prepare first-time college students for success at UMKC. In addition to earning college credit and improving their academic skills, Summer Bridge Scholars develop a sense of connectedness to the UMKC campus and the larger Kansas City community. Applicants interested in the following programs have special admission processes and must submit transcripts, test scores, and additional application materials (if required) in order to be considered for admission.

  • Admission to the Architectural Studies Program is competitive. Test scores are required and early application is recommended.

  • All application materials MUST be submitted or postmarked by December 15th for fall semester and November 1 for spring semester. The Bachelor of Music in Composition has a deadline of December 1st.
  • Applying to the Conservatory is a two-part process:
    • You must first be admitted to UMKC and then separately admitted to the Conservatory.
    • Apply online to UMKC first. 
    • You'll complete the Conservatory application, including the supplemental process within the UMKC application for admission.
    • Refer to the Conservatory application process for information regarding the online application and audition process.

  • Early Assurance applications are due March 1. Qualified applicants are encouraged to APPLY EARLY in the process as complete applications are reviewed on a rolling basis in the fall with admission decisions being made as early as October.   • No additional application materials are required for the Six-Year Law Scholars Program. However, you must have a minimum ACT score of 26 or SAT score of 1240 and a minimum high school core GPA of 3.5.
  • In your application, select Six-Year Law Scholars as your program of study and select an interested major. 
  • Students interested in law who do not meet the above criteria can be admitted as Pre-Law students in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. For more information on pre-law, contact the School of Humanities and Social Sciences Recruitment Office at 816-235-6089. 

  • All application materials MUST be submitted or postmarked by March 1.
  • Supplemental application for the Institute for Urban Education includes:
    • Supplemental IUE application
    • Personal statement of 750 words addressing interest and commitment to urban education
    • Two letters of reference
    • Completed FAFSA
    • Completed UMKC general scholarship applications
    • A formal interview

Applicants who do not qualify for admission under the automatic admission, test-optional admission or competitive admission processes may still be considered for provisional or trial admission. The Office of Admissions will conduct a holistic review of high school GPA, test score, and other relevant information in the application to determine if the applicant will be offered admission. (Additional documentation may be requested before a final admission decision can be made.) If offered admission, students may be required to participate in an academic support program.

Provisional or trial admission are not options for students interested in Six-Year Medicine.

Students who graduate from high school more than five years from the time of application and have fewer than 24 transferable college credit hours may be considered for admission as a mature adult. Students who qualify must submit high school transcripts, GED or HISET and college transcripts for any college coursework. ACT/SAT scores are not required but can be used to help determine the mature adult admission decision.

2. Review application deadlines.

  • All application materials — including official high school transcript, ACT or SAT score and nonrefundable application fee — must be postmarked by the following deadlines:
    • Fall Semester deadline is June 15.
    • Spring Semester deadline is November 15.
  • Some majors have special application processes and deadlines. See "Special application processes" under Step 3 (Review the application process) for more information.
  • Freshmen who apply for admission and postmark application materials by the scholarship priority deadline of January 15 will automatically be considered for renewable university scholarships.
  • Freshmen who are interested in scholarships must submit an ACT or SAT score to be considered.
  • Students in the following programs are not eligible for these scholarships: Six-Year Medicine, Pharmacy, Architecture and Urban Planning.
  • Freshmen seeking consideration for the Trustees' Scholar Award must apply for admission and postmark application materials by December 1. Late application materials cannot be considered.

3. Complete and submit your application.

Students applying to UMKC may submit one of the following applications: UMKC General Application for Admission or the Common Application. Please only submit one of these applications.

Students applying to the Conservatory should submit the UMKC General Application for Admission.

No application fee! Beginning October 1, all new undergraduate, domestic, first-time college students for the Fall 2023 can apply without paying an application fee.

Your application is not considered complete until the following information is submitted: 

  • Official test scores. Test scores are not required for test-optional admission. Test scores may be used for scholarship consideration. The ACT code for UMKC is 2380. The SAT code for UMKC is 6872.
  • Official high school transcript/s. Transcripts are considered official if they are received in a sealed envelope or sent electronically to the Office of Admissions through either Parchment, National Student Clearing House, SCOIR or eScrip-Safe.

Students applying to UMKC must meet admission requirements, and submitting the application does not guarantee admission to the university or to a specific academic program.

4. Submit any supplemental application materials.

Some academic programs have different deadlines and additional application requirements. Make sure you submit any additional application materials. See "Competitive Admission" under Step 1.

5. Send your official transcripts, test scores and additional documentation.

  • Students enrolling in the Fall Semester must submit documentation by July 1.
  • Applicants for admission must submit official high school transcripts.
  • Applicants for admission to certain programs or who would like to be considered for scholarships must submit official ACT or SAT scores.
  • Admission decisions are contingent upon receiving final official transcripts and test scores (if applicable), acceptable completion of all remaining coursework and proof of graduation from high school. Final transcripts and/or test scores will be used to verify self-reported information. UMKC reserves the right to rescind offers of admission should final transcripts and test scores not align with self-reported data.
  • Scholarship offers are made after the receipt of official transcripts and test scores.

  • The ACT code for UMKC is 2380. The SAT code for UMKC is 6872.

  • Transcripts are considered official if they are received in a sealed envelope or sent electronically to the Office of Admissions through Parchment, National Student Clearing House, SCOIR or eScrip-Safe.

  • Students who are permanent residents need to send a copy of the front and back of their Permanent Resident card ("green card").
  • Students who are refugees or are present in the United States based on asylum status need to send a copy of their I-94 that shows either the Refugee or Asylum status stamp.
  • DACA students must submit the I-797 form.

6. Explore options for paying for college.

  • Freshmen who apply for admission and postmark application materials by the scholarship priority deadline of January 15 will automatically be considered for renewable, freshmen-only scholarships.
  • Freshman students seeking consideration for the Trustees' Scholar Award must apply for admission and postmark application materials by December 1.
  • The Free Application for Federal Student Aid form is required for many kinds of financial aid. Complete an online form at fafsa.gov. The UMKC priority deadline is February 1. the UMKC FAFSA code is 002518.

7. Learn how credits will transfer.

  • Students can gain credit through: Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), College Level Examination Program (CLEP) and/or Departmental Exam. A maximum of 30 hours from these programs may be used toward completing undergraduate degree requirements. Check online to see which test credits are accepted at UMKC. 
  • Credit can only be awarded based upon official scores reports sent to UMKC Registration and Records, Administrative Center, 5115 Oak St., Kansas City, MO 64112. You can learn more about credit by examination from Registration and Records.
